So, let\u2019s save it.\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/blockquote>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"quote-block__author quote-block__author--name\">\n\t\t\t\tBenni\t\t\t<\/cite>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\"><strong>What has Benni been up to lately?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">Benni\u2019s #DuchenneCan story featured in March 2021 made a lasting impact on others in the community. His mission to protect the environment and wildlife has continued to grow, and he has made further progress in his quest to create a better world for humans and animals alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"967\" height=\"681\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ptcbio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image.jpeg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is bennisBook.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-15862\" style=\"width:484px;height:341px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ptcbio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image.jpeg 967w, https:\/\/www.ptcbio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-300x211.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.ptcbio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-768x541.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.ptcbio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/03\/image-400x282.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">Committed to educating the next generation of conservationists, he has worked with a local school to establish the <strong>\u2018Rainforest challenge\u2019<\/strong> educational package which has been recommended by his regional Ministry of Education for use in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">Benni is also working on his second children\u2019s book entitled \u2018<strong>Henry with the Polar Bears!\u2019<\/strong> expanding his attention from rainforest conservation, which was the topic of his first book \u2018Henry Saves the Rainforest\u2019, to conservation of the ice caps. Notably, his first book was also launched in Italian language which means\u2026 he can even educate children in other countries!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">And that\u2019s not all! For the reforestation project in Indonesia, Benni has raised over \u20ac70,000. Despite facing challenges with his health during COVID-19, Benni proves again and again that people with Duchenne CAN accomplish many things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/admin.ptcbio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/image012.png\" alt=\"Benni can save the orangutans.\" class=\"wp-image-5706\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">Benni\u2019s connection with the orangutans began several years ago when he visited the Berlin Zoo in Germany. It was an emotional encounter that sparked a strong will to fight for these animals and their natural habitat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">Benni, now 30 years old \u2013 who has been in a wheelchair since he was 10 years old due to having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptcbio.com\/our-science\/therapeutic-areas\/about-duchenne-muscular-dystrophy\/\">Duchenne muscular dystrophy<\/a> \u2013 is devoted to this cause, and has travelled to Indonesia with his parents, and also to Borneo to visit an orangutan rescue camp. With his close friend Willie Smits, who lives in Borneo and manages the camp, Benni helps sustain the work of the camp through fundraising activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/admin.ptcbio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/61-Benni-und-Wilie-stellen-bei-Thalia-das-Kinderbuch-Henry-rettet-den-Regenwald-vor-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Benni Attends a Book Signing Event\" class=\"wp-image-5812\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">For his efforts, Benni has been named an ambassador for orangutans and received the <em>Order of Merit<\/em> from the ministry of Rhineland-Palatinate. He is also raising funds for a \u201dreforestation project\u201d in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">But that\u2019s not all! Benni\u2019s ambassadorship and work continues at home in Germany. With his family, he travels throughout the country \u2013 visiting schools, universities and other institutions, giving educational lectures on the impact of rainforest destruction on our environment and climate. His lectures help raise awareness and inspire the next generation to take action to help make the world a better place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/admin.ptcbio.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/03\/11-Erste-Begegnung-mit-Wilie-Smits-auf-indonesischem-Bodern-Benni-uberreicht-Wilie-ein-gemaltes-Portrat-scaled-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5707\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">A determination to educate others on the importance of environmental protection is what motivated Benni to write a book for children: \u201cHenry Rettet den Regenwald\u201d (\u201dHenry Saves the Rainforest\u201d). It\u2019s a touching story that aims to stimulate children\u2019s understanding of the importance of protecting the environment and the wildlife that live there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"core-block core-paragraph\">The book combines a fictional story with real characters (Henry the orangutan and Benni), inspired by their encounters in the rainforest and at the Nyaru-Menteng rescue center. It includes illustrations colored by Benni himself, and shines a light on three topics: species protection, climate protection and inclusion.
